You’ve been trying to conceive for so long but you’re still not pregnant. Every month you get your hopes up – your period doesn’t start straight away when your fertility app says it should. So you use a pregnancy test but it’s a big fat negative.
You’re starting to feel like you’ll never have a baby. You’re wondering, what’s wrong with your body? Is it time to try IVF? You’re tempted to drown your sorrows with ice cream (or wine).
The problem is that ice cream (and wine) can impact our fertility – as can the stress of not conceiving. So we go back into this cycle of trying to conceive, stressing out about not missing the fertile window, then feeling disappointed when we find out we didn’t conceive again.
When I was trying for my second baby, I tried to conceive for over a year. During this time I experienced miscarriages and so much heartache, month after month. It wasn’t until I learnt about preconception care and started nourishing my body that I was able to have a successful pregnancy.
So what is preconception care? Preconception care is based on the fact that your eggs take around 100 days to mature before ovulation. During this 100 day period, everything you do can affect the quality of your eggs. From your food, toxin exposure, and stress levels, and everything in between will affect your eggs and your chances of conceiving successfully.
Of course, conception doesn’t only rely on the health of your eggs. Sperm plays an equally important role. It takes about 75 days for the final stages of sperm development. Again, this time is vital to ensure the sperm are being nourished so they can successfully fertilise the egg and create a baby.
The great thing about preconception care is that not only will your eggs benefit, but you will generally see an improvement in your overall health and wellbeing. What a fantastic way to start your journey to motherhood!
