The fun of the Halloween night! Sweets! Masks. Giggles and Ghoulish behaviour. There’s nothing like dressing up and frightening your pals and neighbours. My kids and I love it, and in fact, our last Halloween event was as a Voodoo Witch and her 2 Sugar Skull babies. What a hoot!

However, would you bring Halloween into your décor? Especially, into your child’s décor?  Kids and teens in particular love scary images: black, deep violet, skulls, pictures of heavy metal rock stars and tattooed celebrities.  It all seems very cool but is it wholesome? Is it mentally healthy to surround oneself with pictures of death, i.e. skulls?

As an artist, decorator, graphic designer and colour psychologist with an interest in Feng Shui, I look at the imagery within our corporate, aged care and private homes and the effect that it has on us.

There’s a philosophy based in quantum physics begun by Newton, Einstein and other great minds called Law of Attraction, which works like this: whatever you think, good or bad; it will come into your life. The Law doesn’t discriminate between good and bad thinking.  This is why what you are thinking now, in broad terms, is where you will be in 5 years time.

Now consider Feng Shui. Surrounding yourself, or worse allowing your child to have images of death, destruction, dark arts in their bedroom or rumpus attracts just that.  For bedroom décor, in Feng Shui practice, the imagery of one person alone keep relationships single; you always want pairs!  So, in simple terms, you invite into your life that which you surround yourself with and think upon as a result of your daily environmental design.

Not exactly the happy life we wish for ourselves or for our children to have nor the group of friends we want for them. Good peers, good thoughts, good attitudes are best.

So, if the imagery around us is so powerful, then we need positive imagery or representations in our interiors: Art, photos, arrangements, anything that conveys a positive scene, vibe, or style.

I have been painting customised artworks tailored to decors since 2006.  No one has asked me for art that feels depressing. Everyone wants bright, happy and confident. So why can you find art in the galleries that are all about anxiety, depression and isolation? That’s the artist reflecting their experience. Would you put that in your child’s room?  Of course not!

To encourage children to go a step further than happy: promote their ambitions and interests! Remember the Law of Attraction.  What you think is where you’ll be.  Art, photos and images of their passion are incredibly powerful. Putting them in that space is a form of visualising which I call Fantasy Face Portraits.  If the child wants to be an astronaut, dancer, baseball player, then put them in that costume and in that location as a work of art to be a daily source of visualisation and become a family heirloom. It can even enhance their décor; or inspire the new teenage style!

Think outside of the box with your child’s décor and your home’s vibe because what you see is how you feel and what you attract into your life!
