Quite a few years ago I was listening to talk back radio on a long road trip to help keep me awake and alert. The radio announcer was talking about relationships between estranged parents and children and was inviting people to call in and share their stories.
This one particular caller gave me parenting advice that I have never forgotten to this day and have adopted it as a personal mantra.
A woman called in to share about her daughter with whom she had a volatile relationship. Her daughter had moved out when she was 16 years of age and she had not heard from her for nearly 10 years. This mother had no idea where her child was in the world or what she was doing with her life.
The radio announcer asked her one question at the conclusion of her story.
“Why did the relationship with your daughter fail so badly?”
The women answered simply:
“I kept telling her I was a bad mother, and one day she believed me”
How often have you told your children that you are a bad mother?
How long will it take for them to believe you?
This mothers day you will be told that you are the best mother in the whole wide world. So remember to smile and say –
“Thank you ~ I am!”
