The holiday season is upon us and amidst the hustle and bustle of festive preparations and family gatherings, it’s easy to lose sight of our health and wellness goals. However, this time of year can also serve as a perfect opportunity for a wellness reset.

The holidays bring with them a natural break from the usual routines and offer a chance to pause, reflect, see things differently and make positive changes to our health routines – one small, manageable step at a time.

Step back and assess where you stand in terms of your physical and mental wellbeing – what’s working in your routine and what’s not? What new things would you like to try this year? Embrace the sense of renewal that the end of the year brings with it and listen to the little voice inside as you make some positive changes for the new year ahead.

The annual wellness review

Much like your car needs regular maintenance, your body and mind require periodic check-ins. The end of the year is an opportune moment for an annual wellness review. This process involves looking back at the year that’s passed and evaluating your habits, successes and areas needing improvement. By taking stock of your health and wellness journey, you can identify what’s working well and what could use some adjustments. This review can set the stage for a fresh start in the coming year, making it easier to tackle your goals with renewed vigour.

Crafting your wellness reset

A wellness reset during the holidays doesn’t have to be overwhelming – and many things can be done with the kids and as a family. It’s about making intentional choices that positively impact your health and happiness. Here’s what a wellness reset could look like:

  1. Mindful Eating: Savour your holiday meals by eating slowly and focusing on the flavours. This practice can prevent overeating and promote mindful enjoyment.
  2. Hydration: Start your day with a glass of water to kickstart hydration. Aim to drink more water throughout the day to stay energised.
  3. Morning Stretches: Dedicate just a few minutes each morning to gentle stretches. This can improve flexibility and set a positive tone for the day.
  4. Digital Detox: Allocate specific times to disconnect from screens. Use this time to engage in meaningful conversations or enjoy activities that bring you joy. You might even make a new simple rule like “no phones in the bedroom”. Also be mindful of the sorts of content you’re engaging with – is it making you feel good? If not, make the conscious decision to switch it off.
  5. Nature Walks: Take a short walk outdoors each day or incorporate some outdoor play with the kids. Fresh air and nature have a rejuvenating effect on both body and mind. As a Mum, walking in nature with the kids and dogs is a must! I find this quality time together creates great open conversations and sets up a more productive and conflict free day.
  6. Find your fitness favs and firsts: What physical activity have you really enjoyed this year – could you do more of it, change it up, add a new challenge or involve a friend? Also think about something new you’re keen to try in the new year for the first time – is it a new fitness class or a group Personal Training session? Have you always wanted to do a fun run? Pick something without fear of how you will perform – sometimes just trying something new and having a laugh at ourselves while spending time with others is the medicine your soul needs. Often during the holidays, it means you can experiment with different sessions at different times at the gym too, so get creative and try something new.
  7. Breathing Exercises: Incorporate deep breathing exercises to reduce stress and increase oxygen flow. If you need help, there are plenty of guided meditation/breathing apps.
  8. Quality Sleep: Prioritise sleep and aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. This could also involve creating a mini bedtime routine that’s aimed at calming you down – a cup of tea, a few pages of a book or listening to some music, do some journaling – even if it’s just jotting down three things you’re grateful for that day.
  9. Random Acts of Kindness: Spread holiday cheer by performing simple acts of kindness, like sending a heartfelt message or helping a neighbour.
  10. Laughter: Engage in activities that make you laugh, whether it’s watching a comedy or playing board games with the family. Money doesn’t need to be spent on activities. Jumping on the trampoline, setting up obstacles in the driveway, bike riding to the shops for icypoles or heading to the local school to shoot some hoops helps the family stay active and enjoy time together.

Remember, the key to a successful wellness reset is consistency, not perfection. Small, manageable changes can lead to significant improvements in your overall wellbeing. This holiday season, gift yourself the opportunity to reset, recharge, and start the new year with a revitalised perspective on health and happiness.
