Congratulations! Not only are you expecting a baby – you are expecting more than one baby!!!
It is perfectly normal to take a while to get over the shock of finding out you are expecting twins or multiples. Before you can begin the fun part though, you need to make two important decisions, which will depend on the layout of your house and your personal preferences.
- Will they sleep in their own room/s or will they sleep in your room?
- Once they have been home for a while will they move into their own room each or will they share a room?
Once you are though, you can begin the “fun part”. Planning a nursery!
With having multiples, you will soon learn that being prepared is paramount. Given that your babies may arrive a bit early, you don’t want to be moving furniture when you are heavily pregnant.
Sleeping: Babies can safely share a cot until they start moving. Just remember to take into consideration the SIDS safe sleeping guidelines for multiples. Most cots these days convert to toddler beds, which will save you money in the long term, so maybe consider purchasing these. And don’t forget to ask for a multiple birth discount! Most baby stores will give you one if you ask.

Lighting – The truth is that you will probably be seeing a lot of your babies overnight! So you need to be able to see what you are doing. You will need a dim light of some kind. If you babies have spent time in NICU/SCN consider leaving a low light on and the radio, as they will be used to the noise and lights of the hospital.
Feeding chair – Rather than a fancy glider chair, consider a two seater couch. This gives you room to safely feed several babies at once (bottle or breast).
Change tables – Reality is you are going to be changing a LOT of nappies. Ensure yours is a good height for you and has easy accessible storage.
Bouncers/Rockers/Swings –Technically not “necessary”, however they are certainly very helpful. Don’t be tempted to purchase ‘matchy matchy’ bouncers/swings. By having different ones you can alternate each baby in them to keep amused while you tend to another baby.
Seat – Sometimes it’s useful to have a chair or stool that you can perch between two cots while simultaneously patting two babies at once.
Finally one of the most important pieces of planning your nursery is to remind you to ensure you secure all furniture to the wall. Even though they aren’t crawling and getting into mischief at the moment, they soon will be.
Remember, just because you are having two (or more!) babies doesn’t mean you need two of everything. Things like separate car seats are a must, but you certainly don’t need two baby baths for example. You can always get extra items if you need.
Enjoy this special time. Your babies will be here before you know it.
