T’is the season to be jolly. Festive cheer is all around and parties are in full flow. But getting into the spirits (quite literally) can leave us feeling flat. Drinking more mindfully might be the answer. So, how can we do this?

Learn to say no

There can be a lot of pressure to drink at this time of year and it can be hard to say no. But before you bow down to pressure, remind yourself why you’re cutting back. Do you want to avoid a hangover? Do you want to be more in control?

Whatever the reason, don’t let a drink be forced onto you. A good way to do this is to come prepared. With a range of non-alcoholic drinks available that look and taste like the real deal, no one will know the difference, most of all you.

Plan ahead

Xmas gatherings and parties can really test your resistance to alcohol. Plan ways to avoid this. It may be worth considering declining invites to bigger drinking nights. Or pick out events it might be better to drive to.

Alternatively, organise gatherings that suit you better.

A picnic at the beach or a gathering at home is a great way to celebrate the silly season. And with an alcoholic free drink option for every occasion and everyone, no one will miss out.

Lose the fear

It’s easy to worry about how others perceive us and sometimes this leads us to drink. But real friends don’t judge, and others don’t care. Lose the fear and enjoy a drink of bubbles on arrival at an event before swapping to a non alcoholic version.

With an alcohol free drink in hand, you’ll feel and look part of the crowd. It will give you confidence to have fun and stick to your guns. You’ll thank yourself in the morning.

Go with the flow

If we set unrealistic restrictions about drinking, particularly over Xmas, we’ll likely end up feeling like we’re missing out. The danger? One too many at the next event. Hello hangover.

Rather than restricting yourself from having any alcohol, try going with the flow. Just be mindful of moderation.

You can still enjoy a drink but consider having a smaller glass of wine or a low alcohol option. If you’re keen for a cocktail, alternate with mocktails. With such good alcohol free alternatives available, you really can mix it up.

Offer to be the designated driver

Being the designated driver is a win for you (no hangover) and a win for your friends (hello, lift home).

It’s the perfect time to test drive your tastebuds with driver friendly non alcoholic wines or champagnes. To shift things up a gear you can even dabble in some mocktail making.

With so many options there’s bound to be something you love. Being the designated driver never tasted so good.
