I saw a quote the other day from the founder of The Body Shop, Anita Rodick, it read:
“If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room!”
How simple! Seems silly, yet it is something that absolutely resonates with me. Over the last few years, I have been on a mission. I believed and still believe we can all make a difference, no matter how big or small. Small steps towards making a difference each and every day, adds up to a big difference over time.
Now, my goal of making a difference is to ensure every child is safe, healthy and happy. How do I do this? Through the platform that is Little Rockers Radio. We provide great entertainment for kids and support for Mums – our audience grows – more Mums, Dads and Carers press play to listen – the bigger our audience the bigger our sponsors and the bigger our impact. 70% of our profits go to charity and we also run fundraising campaigns that support charity. To date, we have helped to raise well over $100,000 for charity. The goal is to reach $250,000 per year raised for charity in the next few years.
My goal wasn’t always this big. In fact, it started quite small, with some afternoon teas to raise funds.
The difference you want to make in the world could be something else entirely. It may be to be the best parent you can be for your children so they are entering our world with kindness and love, it may be to support your local charity, it may be making a contribution to grassroots kids sports, small changes to the environment, I could go on and on…
Many people have asked me why I focus so much on giving and less on building my empire (so to speak), and the answer is simple and a little selfish too, it makes me feel good.
If you’re looking to make small changes every day to become a better you, a better parent or make a difference in this world here’s some things I think are important for us as adults, and to teach our children…
- Put yourself in others’ shoes
- Make it a habit to respect everyone
- Operate from a place of kindness
- Listen – so simple but how good are we at it really?
- Be grateful for what you have while you strive for what you desire
- Volunteer – for many of us donating money is hard, donating time or services is easier
- Remember: we don’t always know what goes on behind closed doors, so don’t judge
- Honest is important, however always lead with kindness first
- Find what lights you up and follow that
What do you think? What would you add to the list?
