There are few modern interior design trends that are adored as much as the Hamptons Style. Inspired by the sophisticated homes of New York’s rich and famous, the Hamptons style defines casual luxe and is the epitome of timeless elegance.

The classic look of the Hamptons, with its elegant coastal charm, has taken Australian interiors by storm.

This fresh look, that combines fresh yet chic aesthetics, is ideal for creating your own oasis, a calm and contemporary environment where the family can relax, rejuvenate and relax.

We are thrilled to speak with Porter Davis Interior Designer, Koraly Symeou on why she thinks Australians love Hamptons style so much.

If you are looking for a fresh look for your home this summer, we hope this gives will you some inspiration.

What do you love about Hamptons style so much? What made you initially fall in love with it?

I love the Hamptons style because it’s a blend of elegant and opulent details, with the warmth and coziness of a coastal aesthetic. It’s elegant, yet relaxed, coastal living.

Hamptons style is timeless and rich in texture and warmth, and it’s easily adapted to many home themes. With various twists to the traditional Hamptons style, it can be used as a base to many other styles.

The furniture styles and colours within the Hamptons theme means this style can be built or added to over time. It can easily be adapted to existing pieces of furniture and many individual looks.

Why do you think Australians love Hamptons style so much?

Australians adore Hamptons style because it works beautifully with our lifestyle and climate. It’s bright and breezy yet very warm and inviting. It’s a classic style, traditional in a base, with a strong coastal influence whilst remaining elegant and calming.

Hampton style furnishing and overall feel are relaxed and comfortable. Australians love it because it can be built over time and its colour palette can be converted or adjusted easily without having to change key pieces of furniture.

Aussies love Hampton style because it’s a formally relaxed, coastal feel.

We obviously have a very different climate over here. What changes do Aussies need to make when choosing furniture and furnishings to ensure that the Hamptons style translates?

To make the Hamptons style work in cooler climates, I recommend layering sofas and beds with soft, textured throws. These not only add an extra layer of texture to an interior but are also perfect for creating a little extra warmth during cooler times.

Australia’s love of outdoor living and entertaining means outdoor furniture needs to be both comfortable and inviting. Adding heaters or blinds into outdoor entertaining areas is a great way to enjoy these spaces in the cooler months. Invest in outdoor furniture pieces that are long lasting, weather resistant and ideally low maintenance.

In the warmer parts of Australia, adding classic inspired ceiling fans throughout the home will not only add visual appeal but also a practical element for everyday use.

What are the key elements of a Hamptons-style bedroom? (furniture, colours, materials, etc)

The key elements of a Hamptons-style bedroom include a feature bed — upholstered, timber or a combination of both — ceramic or glass feature lamps, natural linen bedding, timber or painted furniture, as well as soft linen, sheer or painted timber window shutters.

If someone hired you and wanted a few pieces to start off with, what would you recommend they buy first and why?

For anyone looking to create the Hamptons style from scratch, I recommend starting off with a few key pieces, such as a loose linen sofa, natural textured rugs and a natural timber trestle or pedestal dining table.

A loose linen sofa in a neutral colour is the core of a Hamptons living area and the perfect base to build around. With the additions of linen cushions in plains, stripes and patterns, and layered with soft knitted throws, this core sofa can be converted in many ways.

A natural textured rug, whether sisal or wool, will add an element of texture, depth and warmth to any space in the home. Investing in a good quality rug will mean it can be enjoyed for many years ahead.

A natural timber trestle or pedestal dining table paired with a beautiful buttoned upholster dining chair is classic Hampton style. A good quality solid timber dining table will not only create the base to an opulent, inviting and charming dining area but will also be something that’s treasured for years to come. This kind of table can be dressed to suit many occasions, whether formal or casual dining and will act as a central hub for your home.
