If your lunchbox creativity begins and ends with a sambo and snack, these simple and cost effective tips could help change all that. The best part? By simply adding an extra container to your assembly line, you can sort your own lunch at the same time!

  1. Eat the rainbow – monotone is a no-go

Foods in an array of vibrant colours don’t just provide a feast for the eyes, but also a perfectly balanced nutritional mix. Variety is the key to keeping lunchtimes exciting. Set a challenge not to double up on colours. If you open up a box with some red cherry tomatoes, green baby cucumbers and bright orange carrot sticks with dip, you’re off to a great start!

  1. The freezer is your friend

Meal prep – it’s the ultimate time saver in the mornings! Try setting aside a couple of hours a week to prepare treats for the week. Pre-cut fruit and drizzle with a squeeze of lemon to keep it from browning. Trawl the internet for freezable recipes that can be made in bulk like fritters, savoury muffins and frittatas. These are all perfect for meal prepping and will defrost by the time your little one gets to lunch!

  1. Keep things bite-sized

Playground-friendly snacks are a must for active kids. Treats that can be eaten on the go give you the best chance of having an empty lunchbox at the end of the day. Think along the lines of homemade protein balls or mini blueberry pancakes.

  1. Give new life to leftovers

Leftovers should never end up in the bin! Reduce waste and save time by giving new life to your left overs. Get creative! Try delicious meatball sandwiches, cold pasta salads or even steak and vegetable kebabs. Let’s be honest –  home cooking always tastes better cold the next day!

  1. Plan according to the pyramid

Let the food pyramid by your guide! As you meander through the aisles of the supermarket, try to balance all bases. Ideas include:

Healthy carbs – Pitas, rye breads, rice cakes, brown breads and wraps.

Protein – Chicken, fish, hummus, tinned tuna or salmon.

Dairy – Cheeses, yoghurt and healthy dips.

Veggie – Anything crunchy, perfect to dip into hummus or cottage cheese.

Fruit – Seasonal and fresh is best!
