COVID-19 has meant that now more than ever, parents and caregivers across Australia understand the impact missing school has on a child’s life. Homeschooling has provided first hand experience both from an educational perspective and more importantly social, the significance of children being connected with their friends.
But what if your child was unable to attend school long term due to chronic illness? Or possibly due to family members, parents or siblings being immunocompromised?
Thankfully MissingSchool, a charity dedicated to keeping seriously sick and injured children connected to their classrooms, was founded putting an end to children missing school for good.
Today we speak with the co-founder Megan Gilmour about the incredible work they are doing.
We ask Megan questions including:
- What are the common challenges children with illnesses experience when missing school?
- How can school absences affect children’s return to school?
- Is there is a power imbalance between adults and kids when it comes to this issue? And if so, how does this affect children’s vulnerability and power?
- What omissions and oversights are there that we should be aware of with the status-quo?
- What are the ethics of child protection and how would applying them make a difference?
- What are some of the common assumptions made about sick children?
- How does this situation affect siblings of children who have chronic illness?
- What will it take to make behavioural change in adults, that being education and health practitioners and parents?
