You’d be far fetched to have never seen a copy of CHILD Mags Iconic Magazine in either a library, doctors surgery or creche at least once in your life.

Let’s face it, they’re hard to miss.

The beautifully oversized glossy magazine with a gorgeous child on the cover.

You experience the feeling of grandeur when reading one and slowly turning the large oversized pages.

You almost feel, in some weird ‘Allison in Wonderland’ way, like you’ve shrunk down to a small child again and you’re reading your mums magazine.

CHILD Mags are a true piece of Aussie culture, the quintessential guide for real parents. For the last 20 years they have, and always will be, the nations leading magazine and largest parenting publication.

For this reason, Kiddipedia have been so honoured to be in partnership with CHILD Mags since we launched in July this year.

So, what’s this news then I hear you ask…

Well, as you would know, Kiddipedia offers a keyword search across Australia’s top parenting websites.

As a World First Parenting Website, Kiddipedia is designed as a Mini-Google site for parents collecting the top Australian parenting websites, and their top articles, into one platform and one search bar.

To celebrate we’ve had a lovely chat to Barbara O’Reilly (affectionally known as Babs) Digital Editor about all things CHILD Mags…

  • As Australia’s largest and most read Parenting Publication could you tell us as little bit about the history of CHILD Mags and where it all began?

Sydney’s CHILD was created in 1989 in the dining room of Joanna Love. Joanna and her business partner at the time, Gillian Hund, worked tirelessly to create a unique and dynamic publication with an initial circulation of just 20,000 copies.

For the first time, Australian parents and carers, grandparents and teachers could pick up a parenting publication with quality, unbiased and thought-provoking parenting information.

Since those early days, Sydney’s CHILD has gone from strength to strength, gaining a reputation for uncompromising and entertaining content. This has been reflected by the publication’s many successes in local and international award programs. These include being named Newspaper of the year by Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association, winning the Professional Teachers’ Council NSW Media Award three times, and twice being shortlisted for the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Print Award. Sydney’s CHILD has also won scores of medals at the Editorial and Design Awards run by the Parenting Media Association – an organisation representing more than 120 parenting magazines and newspapers in the USA, Canada and Australia.

The success of Sydney’s CHILD led to Copeland Publishing’s expansion into other cities. Melbourne’s CHILD was born in 1993 (also gaining the title of Newspaper of the Year by Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association), followed by Adelaide’s CHILD in 2001, Brisbane’s CHILD in 2002, Canberra’s CHILD in 2003 and Perth’s CHILD in 2005. The 20,000 copies of one magazine have now become over half-a-million copies of six magazines.

childmags.com.au (formerly webchild.com.au) was first launched in 2008 and our social-media platforms fully emerged as a national parenting voice in 2013.

  • What are the categories CHILD Mags offers parents information in?

We talk about basically everything in the parenting sphere; because the magazine has been running for such a long time there are few stones left unturned.

  • We understand CHILD Mags offers parents the opportunity to read great articles in your iconic print magazine and online, could you tell us a little more about the Mini Magazines Child offers?

The mini mag is a recently released product of ours; it’s just another way for our readers to get inspired with all the great content CHILD produces. Each month we create a new themed e-mag that email subscribers can download (for free) as a PDF directly to their phone, computer or tablet.

  • Could you tell us a little about your great team?

We have a real mix of people here at CHILD, the editorial team itself is made up of only six people, but we couldn’t have built a more diverse team if we tried – which is such a great thing! Editorial, of course are only a small part of the bigger picture. It takes a lot of people to make a monthly mag!

  • How long have you been Digital Editor at CHILD Mags and what do you love most about your job?

I joined the CHILD team earlier this year and I love that we get to create so much great content for so many Aussie parents. I feel like although some parenting truths are universal, parenting in Australia is full of unique challenges and I love that we get to celebrate that everyday.

  • What do you see as being the most pertinent issue affecting parents today, what would be your tips on how to fix them?

Gosh what a question. I think balance is a huge issue. Whether we are looking at work/life balance, trying to wade through all the opposing advice available for parents or weighing in on the whole healthy food v’s donuts-are-so-cool culture.

As a parent there are an insane amount of decisions that have to be made everyday, both philosophical and actual. As far as my tips for achieving balance; don’t listen to anyone else’s tips. Raising children is such a personal thing. For me I just make sure to step back, evaluate my priorities and make decisions based on what my family needs right now. Often it’s donuts.

  • If I was a genie and was to grant you three wishes, what would you wish for?

The ability to grant wishes, a unicorn and for this last month before my daughter starts school to last forever.

  • What are your three favourite children’s books of all time?

Little House in the Big Woods, Ballet Shoes and Harriet the Spy. I’m old school.

  • If you could re-live one day in your life again, what day would that be and why?

I don’t think I would. Beautiful memories are best left as just that.

  • What would be your top tips for staying calm this Christmas and silly season?

Don’t buy into the hype. Say no when you need to, spread yourself thick and enjoy.

  • What’s in store for CHILD Mags in 2017?

We have so many exciting things in the pipeline for 2017, but unfortunately we can’t tell you anything just yet. You will have to wait and see : )
