If you’ve got a really fussy kid like me, you know how important it is that every mouthful they eat is good quality food. One change I made in our house was to start making my own tomato sauce. My kids love tomato sauce, like most, and if it’s good quality and not full of sugar and additives then I don’t mind them having it – especially if it gets my fussy boy eating!
It took me a while to make a recipe the kids liked, I had a few fails but this recipe gets the thumbs up every time. I make it in a large batch so I have enough for a few weeks. You could make even more if you have bottles to pour it into.
This recipe is gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, egg free, nut free, soy free, refined sugar free
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsps oil (I use coconut but any oil you regularly use will be fine)
- 1 brown onion, cut in quarters
- 2 cloves freshly garlic, chopped
- 2 x 700g jar tomato passata (I use organic)
- 200g raw honey (or to taste – you could use less if you like)
- 160g quality gluten free white vinegar (I use Cornwell’s)
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp salt
- 8 whole cloves
- 12 whole peppercorns
Method:
- Place the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté for about 5 minutes until lightly browned
- Toss in all of the other ingredients and bring the mixture to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook uncovered for approx 40 minutes until it has reduced and you are happy with the consistency
- Pour the entire mixture through a sieve to remove the onion, garlic, whole cloves and peppercorns – do not be tempted to leave these in and puree – I have done this to not waste it and it changes the flavour (even just the onion)
- Pour into sterilized bottles and store in the fridge until ready to use
Tip: when I first changed my kids over I did pour it into bought tomato sauce bottles – tricky I know but it worked. You could even do half store-bought and half homemade and gradually increase the homemade amount until it’s all homemade.
