You may never have heard that low back pain has anything to do with fertility. From a Chinese medicine point of view, it can. It doesn’t mean it does for every person who has it, no, but it’s something to certainly take notice of if you are having fertility issues.

According to the Acupuncture Evidence Project 2017*, there is sufficient evidence now to say, it is clear that acupuncture benefits chronic low back pain.

How then could this be related to your fertility? This requires you to go on a little Chinese medicine journey with me. Chinese medicine is a system that has developed over 2000 years. They looked at how they were affected by the seasons, their emotions, their food and other external influences, which they named according to how they affected the body; wind, heat, damp, dryness etc.

They also made associations with the internal organs and all of those things, as they believed and saw that everything was interrelated. We are affected by our environment, what we eat, our emotions and external pathogens.

The element of water was linked to the Kidneys and the Kidneys were said the be the foundation of life. In Chinese medicine, when there is chronic lower back pain, it is said to relate to the Kidneys. Strong kidneys are needed for long life and for fertility so, if you are having fertility issues and also have lower back pain, even if that’s mostly at a certain time of your menstrual cycle, then it’s important to get it checked out by a registered acupuncturist.
