Inflammation is beneficial when you are fighting infection, disease or injury. However chronic inflammation is terrible for fertility. Therefore, I believe that an anti-inflammatory diet for fertility is one of the best diet plans that you can follow. Reducing inflammation helps to improve egg health, optimise your cycles and improve embryo implantation – and it’s great for sperm health too!
So, which foods should you include in your anti-inflammatory diet?
- Leafy green vegetables: broccoli, kale and spinach are beneficial for your fertility as they are rich in antioxidants.
- Salmon: rich in long chain omega-3 fatty acids which are fantastic for reducing inflammation and improving the health of your eggs
- Extra virgin olive oil: this contains oleic and oleocanthal which are nutrients found to have incredible anti-inflammatory properties. Adding 1 tbsp of olive oil to your cooking is one simple way to incorporate this strategy.
- Nuts: the perfect on-the-go snack that has been shown to reduce inflammation. Check out my video on the best nuts to eat for fertility.
- Berries: Emerging research has found that adults who consumed a punnet of berries on a daily basis had significantly less inflammation than the people who did not.
Which foods should you avoid?
Foods that have been associated with an increase in inflammation probably come as no surprise! These include fried foods, pastries, soft drinks and sugar-sweetened beverages, and processed meats. So, my tip is to try and avoid or limit these foods as much as possible.
