The premature arrival of a baby generally can create significant stress for the whole family. First and foremost, the mother and baby’s immediate health is of course the most important thing. However once the initial shock subsides, the below tips can help with how you can best assist during the stressful period.

  1. Finish the preparations

One thing to consider is that mothers with a premature baby have often not finished their baby preparation. Family members and friends can create a list of the things that might be needed or jobs that need doing. These can range from having extra supplies at the hospital such as a change of clothes, toiletries or finishing the nursery which can be a wonderful gift, but should be discussed and considered with the parents.

  1. Support the feeding transition

Premature babies commonly have to be tube-fed for a period of time however it is important for mothers wanting to breastfeed that they begin to build their milk supply so it is ready when baby is. Expressing breastmilk straight after birth ensures the production process continues to develop so making sure mum has a good breast pump like a Philips Avent Single Electric Breast Pump is essential.

  1. Transportation

Transport to and from the hospital to visit the baby can come at a financial cost due to onsite parking. Premature babies who require long hospital stays take lots of extra visits so organising a roster to take the parents to the hospital may be a practical way to help.

  1. Help at home

Keeping the house running while mum and dad are focusing on their premature newbown can be a great help especially if there are other children or even pets. This can vary from having someone stay in the house or regularly visiting. The key is to ask, and to be understanding if the family do not want any additional bodies in the house.

  1. Nourishment

Often during stressful times parents will put themselves last. It is important everyone is healthy, rested and nourished, especially if mum is pumping for baby. Check-in with the parents and see if they need their fridge stocked up or a nice home cooked meal, even if its eaten at the hospital.

  1. Healthy visitors

When a premature baby comes home it can be important to make sure that all family members and friends coming into contact with baby are up to date with their vaccinations.  It is critical that visitors are healthy, and it is also best to keep toddlers and children at day care or school at a distance in the early days, unless neccesary.  Premature babies are often more susceptible to illness, particularly respiratory issues, so it is absolutely vital to keep those with illnesses away.

Fortunately, in Australia most premature babies have great outcomes, but the stress can have a big impact on the whole family. By using these few tips will ensure that you can help out in the best way possible.
