Ryan is the one of only 14 in the world and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere to be a LEGO Certified Professional.

Originally, from the corporate world, A Chief Information Officer; Ryan’s creativity was limited and bound by the constraints of his job, however, the ability to express and create through a unique medium offered him an amazing opportunity, the ability to create something that both children and adults alike can be inspired by.

Ryan and his team have built some of the worlds most detailed and large LEGO models, and even have the honour of being responsible for building models for LEGO offices around the globe.

Having produced 2 global touring exhibitions and hundreds of models for museums, galleries and shopping locations around the world, there really isn’t anything that they cannot make out of LEGO.

Over the years, Ryan and his team have won many awards for their works and they maintain a unique style which makes their creations some of the best and most recognizable in the world.

1.   When and how did you start making these LEGO creations?

I started back in 2007 just building models for fun, then I did some work with the LEGO company and, before I knew it, I was doing more and more work with them.  I managed to make the transition and turn my hobby into a full-time career in 2011.

 2.   How long does it take for you to make such a massive model and approximately how many LEGO bricks are used?

Every model is different – the quickest build in our latest exhibition, Brickman Awesome, took about a week while the longest, our 7.5m tall Nasa SLS rocket, took over 500 hours!  We used the best part of 400,000 bricks and it weighs nearly half a ton.  It’s crazy!

3.   From all the creations you have done so far, do you have any favourites?

That’s a really hard question, but it would probably be from 2011 when I made a big LEGO Colosseum for the Nicholson Museum in Sydney.  It was very hard to make, making an oval shape out of square bricks is tough but the end result was amazing.

4.   What does it take to be a LEGO Certified Professional?

Kids are going to hate me for saying this but you need to be really good at maths.  We use crazy maths every day, so it pays to concentrate on maths class at school!

5.   What is your message to the younger generations out there about LEGO?

Our passion is not only in building LEGO, but it’s also to inspire kids (and big kids!) to be creative.  That’s really important to each and every one of us, and we hope our exhibitions will show them what it’s possible to achieve with patience, perseverance and persistence!  That’s why Brickman Awesome offers a lot for kids to do, from making penguins to giant dump trucks and everyone that comes along can add a part to Australia’s longest LEGO model.

6.   Do you still have anything more you want to accomplish?

I have a huge list of models that I’d love to build; in fact, there isn’t really a day that goes by when I don’t think of something new I’d love to build.  I keep them a tip top secret though for our next exhibition!
