When I was in school, the fanciest tech we had was a Casio calculator and the overhead projector. Fast forward to today, and students are using ChatGPT to knock out essays faster than you can say ‘homework.’ Yet most parents don’t know it’s happening. AI is already in our schools. The question is: are we preparing our children for the future, or pretending it’s not happening?
Some schools are trialling AI tools in the classroom. Others are banning them outright. Some teachers are excited, some are overwhelmed, and others are quietly Googling ‘what is ChatGPT’ during lunch. And fair enough — there’s no national policy, no standardised approach, and almost no support for the educators expected to keep up. Right now? It’s the digital Wild West.
Parents are understandably concerned. Will my child cheat? Will they stop learning how to write or problem solve? Is this AI stuff even safe? What happens to their data? And my personal favourite: “Wait, do I need to understand this stuff too?!”
Confused Classrooms, Conflicted Policies
AI isn’t the enemy — but ignorance might be. Artificial Intelligence is here. Not coming. Here. Already changing the way your child learns, studies, and thinks about work. The worst thing we can do as parents, educators, or a nation is ignore it. Instead of banning tools like ChatGPT, we should be asking how they’re being used. Teaching children when it’s helpful, and when it crosses a line. Showing them how to think critically, check for bias, and not just blindly accept AI-generated answers.
As UNESCO’s 2023 guidance suggests, we should be integrating AI literacy into classrooms and teaching kids how to think ethically and critically about these tools. It’s no different to how we taught past generations to use calculators, or how we made peace with Wikipedia.
And please, let’s talk about the so-called AI plagiarism detectors. In my opinion, many are about as useful as a chocolate teapot. They give schools a false sense of control. A way to tick a box and say ‘we’re handling AI’ without actually having a policy, a conversation, or a plan.
If we’re serious about raising smart, capable children, we need to stop pretending we can detect or discipline our way through this. We need to teach our way through it. Because right now, it doesn’t feel like we’re preparing this generation for the world they’ll enter. We’re still schooling kids for a world that no longer exists.
The jobs they’ll apply for haven’t been invented yet. The tools they’ll use are evolving daily. We owe it to them to catch up. So, what can we do that is practical and will assist our children to lean in, learn and leverage these tools in an ethical and strategic way?
Five Ways to Teach AI Ethics at Home
1. Talk About the Line Between Getting AI to Help and When it Becomes Cheating
It’s up to us to explain and showcase how using AI to brainstorm ideas or clarify concepts is fine, but copying entire answers isn’t. By using examples from existing schoolwork, we can educate in real time what this difference is, and why it’s important.
2. Ask Your Child to Fact-Check AI Answers
Show them how to double-check responses and share real-life examples where failing to fact-check had consequences. Prompt their curiosity: “Does that sound right?” “Where could we verify this?” It’s a great way to teach digital literacy.
3. Use AI Together for Fun Learning
Ask ChatGPT to help plan outings for a weekend activity, write a song about their sibling for their birthday, or help guide them in researching a hobby. When AI feels collaborative and creative, children learn its strengths and limitations.
4. Encourage Reflection, Not Just Production
After using AI, ask your child what they learned. How did the use of the tool improve or change the way they needed to respond? Ask them to explain the answers without the use of AI… That’s where the real growth happens.
5. Model Ethical Tech Use
Children watch what we do more than what we say. The way you interact and utilise these tools yourself showcases more about the embedding and learning than you realise. Let your kids see you using AI responsibly in your own life or work. Allow them to quiz you as to why you use the tools for this, but not that. How do you fact-check and what are you learning from your digital adoption? You’ll find this open dialogue will help you lift your AI literacy together.
The bottom line? AI is not the enemy. But ignorance might be. Pretending this isn’t happening doesn’t protect our children. Teaching them how to navigate AI — safely, ethically, intelligently, does. We’ve got a short window to get this right. Let’s not waste it arguing over whether robots are coming. They’re already here. Let’s make sure our children are ready.
