The holiday season is often a mix of fun and stress, the pressure to meet expectations can at times overshadow the festive spirit. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of gift giving, social gatherings, and end of year to do lists which can make it challenging to stay grounded and enjoy the moment.

Focusing on “intention” and “perspective” during this time can be a powerful way to navigate it all with more ease and less stress. By setting clear intentions and prioritising meaningful connections over material gifts or choosing activities that truly bring joy rather than doing things out of obligation, you can create a more fulfilling holiday experience for you and those around you.

Self-care is vital during this busy time of year. Factoring in what you need as a parent to ensure that you have the energy to make Christmas and end of year celebrations what you want them to be is a non-negotiable for me.  Please remember that you can say “no”.  You get to choose the things you do and how you spend your time.  Everyone is busy; a politely declined invitation might be the strongest flex of your self-care muscle.

In the lead up to December and the busyness of end of year and Christmas celebrations have a think about who, and what are important to you and your family and set an intention around what your goals are for this time of year.    Is it to have the most amazing over top Christmas ever?  Or it could be to focus on catching up with people after a busy year. Whatever it is you get to decide how you spend your time.  Make a list of the non-negotiables events and people you want to see.  Then work out the next level, which could be something like “Yes if everything else works” and then the clear “No’s”.  This way you’re not spreading yourself too thin, and you have the energy and enthusiasm to enjoy the things that you want to enjoy.    When things inevitably feel a tad overwhelming, and you feel spread thin you can go back to your intention and your priorities and recalibrate.

This time of year can be really hard for a lot of people and it’s often for the people whose life is already a little bit hard.   The ones who may not have a great relationship with their family or the connection and bonds that they crave.  We are bombarded by advertising depicting happy, loving and connected, families and friends. It can trigger pain around our own family and our circumstances in general.  Sometimes, even for the most positive of people, Christmas and the holiday season can bring up feelings and emotions that we can otherwise keep at bay.   Chances are you’re not alone in these feelings. Sometimes all we need is a bit of time with someone who we enjoy being.  Connection is a great way to fill your own cup so that you have more to give others.  it could be as simple as a 20-minute walk or invite someone over for a cup of tea.

Gratitude and focusing on the positives are a great strategy all year around. Gratitude is the process of showing appreciation for the things in life that are meaningful or valuable to you. Taking a moment to notice and acknowledge the things you’re grateful for each day can brighten your outlook, boost your mood, and help you feel more positive in the face of challenges.

Journalling is a great way of practising gratitude and can be as simple as ending the day by journaling three things that you’re grateful for. It can’t feel a bit forced to begin with but does become easier with practice.  I also like to go over my journal entries at the end of the week before starting the next week. It can be a good way of understanding the things that you are starting to value and be grateful for.

The other thing is simply being aware of your thoughts and your self talk.  It has such a profound effect on your mindset.  Here’s is a real life example from this morning; I really struggled at the gym, the body felt sluggish, and I was tired.  I said to the trainer at the end of the session “this morning sucked!” he replied by saying  “well done for showing up”.  So, I took his lead and instantly clapped back with “I found this morning really hard, I’m proud of myself for showing up”.  That doesn’t mean, I instantly felt that pride and gratitude in myself for showing up.  I was still really annoyed because my body struggled this morning but by reframing it, now, three hours later, I am proud of myself.   I woke up tired and grumpy, and my body felt sluggish, but I still did a 45-minute workout, which I know will benefit me physically and mentally throughout the day. I should be proud of myself!

There is so much to gain by practising gratitude. Don’t wait until Christmas to start, do it now.
