Frozen meals aren’t always bad for you, especially when you make them yourself! Jamie Oliver is a big advocate for planning ahead and using your freezer to help save time when feeding your family nutritious meals.
Doubling up
Winter is known for its freezer-friendly dishes like soups, curries and stews. While you’re already prepping your mid-week dinner, double the ingredients and pop half in the freezer – portion out into individual serves for a quick lunch, or in one large serve to save the prep on a whole dinner.
- Vegetable Chilli – This delish dish can be enjoyed with corn chips, over rice or in a wrap.
- Lentil and Spinach Soup – Packed with fresh and frozen veggies, this is the perfect immune booster.
Back to basics
Rather than store-bought, processed sauces, prepping some flavour bases can take a whole heap of time out of your meal prep time. Things like sauces, pastes and stock can be thawed as needed and used to prep a quick, healthy and delicious homemade meal.
- Tomato based sauce – The perfect start to any pasta dish
- Thai Green Curry – Create a flavour base as a paste or curry sauce in the freezer, ready to add to your fresh protein of choice when needed.
- Easy stock – Save your veggie and herb scraps to prepare your own flavoursome stock that saves some space in landfill too.
Frozen in time
Did you know frozen veggies have the same nutritional value as their fresh counterparts? The frozen veggies you can buy from the supermarkets are snap-frozen in their prime meaning all of their vitamins are locked in and just as good for you as fresh produce. If you have some fruit or veg that looks like it may start to turn before you’ll get to it, cut it up and store in your freezer until you’re ready to go.
