Toxin exposure is often overlooked as a cause of infertility, but in our modern world we are being bombarded every day by hundreds of toxins that can have devastating effects on your reproductive organs. Let’s have a look at the top 3 toxins you should be avoiding to give your body the best shot at conception possible.
- Bisphenol A, shortened to BPA, is in plastics and the lining of tin cans. It can act like oestrogen within your body, and it disrupts your hormone system. Since we discovered how bad BPA is for health, many companies created BPA free plastics, but the BPA replacements (often BPS or BPF) could be just as harmful, if not worse. We just haven’t tested them yet. Be cautious and swap to glass or stainless steel instead.
- Parabens are used as a preservative in many cosmetics and personal care products. Like BPA, they act as an oestrogen in your body, which messes with your hormones. They have even been found inside breast cancer tumours! You can avoid parabens by choosing products labelled “paraben free” or opting for strictly natural brands that don’t use chemicals.
- It doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, and it also doesn’t play nice with your body! Phthalates are found in both cosmetics and plastics, so they’re everywhere! Studies have shown women with higher levels of phthalates while undergoing IVF treatment had less eggs collected, less pregnancies, and less live births. If you’re wanting to start a family, it’s critical to avoid this nasty chemical.
Now that you’re armed with the knowledge of which chemicals are crucial to avoid, have some fun shopping and finding alternatives that are fertility safe.
