On Thursday, June 9, communities across Australia will come together to make Change for Australian children who have experienced trauma from neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Unfortunately, thousands of children are continuing facing the flow on effects of the pandemic, including significant mental health challenges as a result of the lockdowns, major school disruptions and families facing severe financial pressures.
In 2020-2021, more than 486,000 reports were made to authorities. Of those, 48,000 were confirmed cases of abuse and neglect. This figure continues to climb each year. Act for Kids alone has experienced a 30 per cent increase in calls for support. This has been sustained during the new-normal phase of COVID-19.
“Sadly, more children than ever before have suffered abuse and neglect behind closed doors which has led to thousands of children waiting months to see a therapist,” Doctor Katrina Lines, Act for Kids Chief Executive Officer said.
“Giving Day is set to bring back hope to children and their families who are yet to receive vital support through therapy.”
Giving Day is an opportunity for Australians to help address the flow-on impacts of the pandemic with money raised dedicated to meeting the ongoing COVID-induced demand.
Thanks to Act for Kids’ generous partner Budget Direct (Powered by Auto and General) – every dollar raised will be MATCHED – which means every donation will have DOUBLE the impact.
“We’re encouraging everyone, businesses, sporting associations and individuals to dig deep this June. It could be as simple as making one change, such as going without a coffee to give some spare change to children in need,” Dr Lines said.
Every donation made to the Act for Kids Giving Day is tax-deductible. To support Act for Kids Giving Day this June – head to www.charidy.com/acforkids
