What kid doesn’t love crystals?  Using crystals gives our kids some power over their emotions, helping them to manage their stress and anxiety with something tangible, something they can touch, see and play with rather than just something they can think about.  A wonderful mindfulness tool and a fun colourful strategy to add to their emotional toolbox.

Below is an excerpt from a favourite workshop with my younger clients where we learn all about crystals, how to look after them and how they can help us to manage our stress and anxiety. It is written in a way that our kids can relate to so make sure you share this with them and let the magic and fun begin!

“Because some crystals have the ability to project energy and some to absorb it, they need to be cleansed and charged prior to being used for the first time and then again after a period of use.

So how do we do that?

Cleansing and charging

You can place most crystals under the full moon or in direct sunlight for 24 hours.  Some crystals can be cleansed by placing them under running water and some can fade in sunlight so I would suggest using moonlight or a smudge spray for cleansing.

Attuning:  Carry the crystal with you, place it under your pillow or somewhere else close to you.  Crystals are activated by your intent so you need to tell your crystal what you want it to do.  A simple and quick method is to hold the crystal in your hand and gently blow on it stating something like “Please help me to be brave and to speak up in class today”.

Listed below are three of the more common, and easily found crystals, that can be used for stress and anxiety management.   The descriptions under each crystal have been adapted from “The Crystal Bible” by Judy Hall.

Amethyst (purple)  This crystal is extremely beneficial to the mind as it can calm or stimulate as needed.  A great stone for promoting sleep as it is calming to an overactive mind and regarded as a natural tranquiliser.  It helps you to feel less scattered and more focussed and it dispels anger, rage, fear and anxiety.

Rose Quartz (pink)  This stone gently draws off negative energy and replaces it with love.  It emotionally releases unexpressed emotions teaching you how to love and accept yourself.  Rose quartz invokes self-trust and self-worth.  It enhances positive affirmations and encourages self-forgiveness and acceptance.

Tourmaline (comes in many colours)  Black Tourmaline Cleanses, purifies and transforms negative energies. It promotes self-confidence and dispels fear.  It is a powerful mental healer balancing the left and right side of the brain transmuting negative thought patterns into positive ones.  It also aligns the chakras and mental processes improving hand to eye co-ordination (dyslexia).

Some ideas on how to use these crystals include:

  • Make a crystal water spray to calm, cleanse or clear your room or space.

(Some crystals cannot be put in water so make sure you research which ones to use first)

  • Spray crystal water on your aura.
  • Carry the crystal with you in your pocket or bag.
  • Wear it as a pendant, necklace or bracelet.
  • Put it under your pillow.
  • Write your wish on paper and wrap it around your crystal.
  • Meditate with your crystal.
  • Make a crystal grid.
  • Make a gem elixir.
  • Make a gem pouch.
  • Use your crystal as a fidget tool.”

The sky’s the limit when it comes to the number and variety of ways that crystals can be used for stress and anxiety management.  Simply select what crystal you are drawn to, or which one you think will best suit your needs, cleanse and attune it and then most of all, experiment and have fun.
