Considering we have been home in insolation for a few weeks now, you may have started running out of fresh ideas to keep your preschooler engaged.

Coupled with this, due to shop closures and accessibility to craft supplies, and also possible reduced income it’s not always feasible to keep purchasing new toys and games to keep them entertained.

There’s no doubt that having the kids home has presented a world of challenges as social isolation has taken away much of what is good for children. That being the educational and social context of preschool, kindergarten and daycare, holidays, access to entertainment, libraries, outdoor play areas.

Our chat today is not about focusing on the challenges, rather about presenting creative solutions to help and provide support.

Looking for the positives in the challenging time of restrictions. And also how to find and source inspiration from creativity as an educational outlet for our preschoolers.

To help provide this we are very fortunate today to welcome our special guest, Dr Tessa Grigg.

Dr Tessa Grigg is the Research and Education Manager at Toddler Kindy GymbaROO and KindyROO, She is a part-time lecturer at the University of Canterbury, NZ, a teacher and producer of children’s music.

We ask Dr Tessa questions including:

  1. You have mentioned before that this time of being ‘at-home’ is the perfect opportunity to teach children about creativity. Can you tell us more about this?
  2. You’ve mentioned creativity is in abundance at the moment and this is a good thing for children to be part of. With limited resources at home, how is this possible, and how can we help foster the development of creativity in our children?
  3. How do children learn through play?
  4. What is an open-ended play experience is, and how can parents provide them with the current restrictions we are facing?
  5. What is the relationship between creativity and COVID-19?
  6. What are the challenges for parents in this time of social distancing and young children?
  7. Your article talks about creativity and it implies that it is not just about the Arts. What is the definition of creativity?
  8. What can parents do to encourage creativity in their children?
  9. How do you see children benefiting from the experience of home isolation and what valuable lessons and life long skills could they be learning and developing through this experience?
