Did you know that only 1/3 of adults are able to effectively digest dairy? Or that drinking plant milk is one the easiest ways to reverse climate change and prevent heart disease? No wonder 1 in 6 Aussies prefer the dairy-free life!

In celebration of World Plant Milk Day on Saturday 22nd August, let’s take a closer look at the alternative milk industry in Australia and what other benefits there are.

Plant-based milks are on the rise

Australian dairy milk production continues to decline while the plant milk category grew by 82% in 2018, with plant-based milks now accounting for 7 percent of all milk drunk in Australia and the global dairy alternative market expected to reach $26.86 billion in 2023.The different types of plant-based milks available to buy include almond, oat, soy, coconut, cashew, pea, hemp, macadamia, rice, avocado, sesame and peanut milk. Oat milk is one of the most popular currently, experiencing a 686 percent surge in the US last year alone.

Go dairy-free for your health

There are many benefits to your wellbeing when you switch from cow’s milk to plant milk, for example:

  • plant milks contain more calcium, less sugar, no IGF-1 hormones, less calories and are easier to digest than dairy milk.
  • Numerous studies prove that dairy consumption is not required for healthy bones and can actually increase the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures. Many plants and fortified plant milks contain sufficient calcium.

Alternative milks are better for the planet

Plant-based milks are also kinder to animals and the environment too! Did you know:

  • One glass of Califia Farms Unsweetened Almond Milk uses over 40% less water to produce than the average dairy milk in the US (2018 study by Califia Farms and Universities of California at Davis and Santa Barbara).
  • A 2018 Oxford study found that plant-based milks, including oat and almond, require over 90% less land than dairy milk. Plant milks also produce 60-80% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than dairy milk.
  • Dairy-free milk is also undeniably kinder to cows and calves.
  • Oat milk is one of the most sustainable plant milks on the market that’s also nutritious and delicious.

“Numerous studies consistently prove that a wholefood, plant-based diet is best for optimum health, and it’s also the single biggest chance we have in the fight against climate change. Plant milks require much less water and land to produce than dairy milk and given there are so many different delicious plant milks to choose from now it really is easy for people to try dairy-free alternatives,” says Greg Steltenpohl, founder and CEO of Califia Farms, who produces a range of plant milks and cold brew coffees.

“Even a simple switch such as swapping out dairy from your daily coffee for a plant milk like our new Oat Barista Blend, goes a long way in helping the environment and your health.”
