Dr Justin Coulson has partnered with BIG W for TOYMANIA 2020 as their Play Expert. Today we asked him a series of questions about the power of play.

But before we get into the questions, here’s a little about our guest.

Dr Justin Coulson is one of Australia’s most trusted and respected parenting experts and thought leaders.

He is a man of great integrity having set out on his career path following struggles with his own family relationships.

In his pursuit to to learn how to be a better husband and father, he earned first-class honours and a subsequent PhD in Psychology.

He has since written 6 books, is a four-time bestselling author, an occasional columnist for the New York Times, is a TEDx speaker, a consultant to the Australian Government’s ‘Raising Children Network’ and appears regularly in all of Australia’s major news outlets for television, radio, and print.

Oh, and of course is busy a Dad to six daughters.

 

We ask Dr Justin Coulson questions including

  1.  What is the importance of toys and how they can be incorporated into playtime to entertain and assisting with children’s development?
  2.  What can parents incorporate or introduce into playtime that can help with their children’s skill development and problem-solving?
  3. What are your thoughts on the benefits of loose parts play?
  4. What are the benefits of parents playing with their kids?
  5. How can parents help their children to be more engaged with toys and have them indulge in more playtime?
  6. For a parent that possibly hasn’t heard of open-ended play experiences, and or know what it is, can you please explain? Also, what kinds of toys provide this type of experience
  7. Are gender-typed toys less supportive in ensuring optimal development for children, and if why
