Irrespective of what continent you’re on, or which country you live in, we’re all connected by the same challenges of social isolation.

There’s no doubt in these last these few months that life has been tough with entire families living on top of each other, trying their best to juggle living, working and learning from home, under each other’s noses and one roof, 24/7.

When you think about it, it really is a recipe for disaster. Talking about recipes, at least they come directions and step by step instructions. COVID-19 surely didn’t.

With everyone trying their best, it doesn’t hurt to have some guidance and help to get us through this challenging time. And that’s what this chat is about today.

Sharing her expert tips today we welcome Martine Oglethorpe, Digital Wellbeing and Online Safety Educator and otherwise known as ‘The Modern Parent’.

Martine Oglethorpe is a mother to five boys with a background in secondary education and a Masters in counselling.

We ask Martine questions including:

  1. How can parents best support their kids online whilst at home?
  2. Studies have shown us that when children are in a regular routine and can recall times in their day that they can rely on something happening, then they are more likely to feel a sense of well being and security. Can you tell us a little more about this?
  3. What about transitioning back to school? How will parents manage the changes again and how will kids manage the reduction in screen time and a return to the possibility of firmer boundaries?
  4. Social media has helped us stay connected at a time when we have been physically been segregated. However, one of the negative things about it is that it many people, consciously or subconsciously, compare their lives to others. This is not great given we’re more sensitive at the moment. What’s your advice for anyone that has found themselves in this situation lately?
  5. Not sure how many of us would have been able to get through these last few months without access to the online world. As a Digital Well Being and Safety Officer, what can you see be the pros and cons of the online world at this time?
  6. How can families best ensure their mental well being and manage online addictions when we have 24/7 access to the likes of Netflix and other internet streaming entertainment services?
  7. Dopamine. What are your thoughts, do you think Aussies have an addiction to it and what are the concerning side effect it causes us?
  8. Gaming, such as Fortnight, exposes children to a continued adrenalised state, which can be addictive. What are your thoughts on this?
