There are 3 very big reasons why we should switch to wrapping our gifts in fabric (furoshiki method) instead of paper.
1: Time
How often have you found this not only time-consuming task but also frustrating one? If the gift isn’t square, we bet that you’re looking for a gift bag that is the perfect size to home the gift. And don’t forget the times when you’ve found that you’ve run out of sticky tape. One time we received a gift from friends that had used hospital grade tape, clearly, they’ve shared that tapeless moment.
Wrapping gifts with fabric wrap is quick and easy because all you need to wrap the gift is a piece of fabric. No rummaging through drawers and cupboards looking for paper, bags, and tools to complete the task. Just wrap the fabric around your gift, tie it in a knot and you’re done.
Trust us you will wonder why you hadn’t made the switch years ago.
2: Money
The cost of wrapping paper can add up. Wrapping paper in Australia can range from as little as 50c per meter to $1.50 per meter. And it’s reported that on average Australians use 8mt per person at Christmas alone.
But using fabric to wrap gifts don’t need to cost anything (or the earth). You can reuse a wrap that was gifted to you previously or use fabric you find around your home such as sheets and garments that are no longer used/worn but the fabric is still in good condition. If gifting a baby gift, try a baby wrap (practical in more ways than one) or if it’s a gift for the kitchen what about a tea towel. Wrapping paper is an unnecessary cost – and unnecessary waste.
3: Waste
Australians will use more than 150,000 kilometres of wrapping paper at Christmas time. This is enough paper to wrap around the Earth’s equator almost four times. And sadly, not all this paper is recycled or can be recycled.
By using fabric wrap to wrap your gifts leaves no waste, absolutely none. No tape, no leftover paper, no paper roll, nothing. When your gift is opened, they are only left with the fabric that they can be reused to wrap a gift of their own in the future. Even if you managed to reuse paper or a bag, reusing fabric in comparison will have a far greater repurposing life than its competitors.
If you want one more reason to switch from paper to fabric here it is.
4: Craft Project
This might not be for everyone which is why it’s an extra reason 😉
Grab some old sheets cut them up (hem them if your able to sew) then you can paint your own Christmas designed wrapping. It’s a great mindful activity and it’s the perfect gift for grandchildren to gift their grandparents presents in. The wrapping could be used again, or it could also be framed.
