Australian children suffering with aggressive cancer will have access to personalised treatment in real time, irrespective of where they live thanks to Zero Childhood Cancer programs national trial.
Zero Childhood Cancer program’s national clinical trial has launched today.
Every week in Australia, three children and adolescents die from childhood cancer however with the unprecidented achievements of the team at Children’s Cancer Institute and the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick treatment will be become much more accessible.
Zero Childhood Cancer personalised medicine program is to improve treatment option and quality of life for the children with the most aggressive cancers.
The aim of the trial is for all children with aggressive cancers to have access to this trial and innovation regardless of where they live, to streamline patient test results and fast track treatment.
The National trial builds upon proven success of a pilot trial conducted in NSW over the past 18 months.
Initially they aimed to enrol 12 patients, in the end the enrolled 60 children because the demand was unprecidented. The pilot trial proved the program feasability and allowed them to faciliate and optimise the necessary complex logistics to allow to provide a meaningful result back to doctors fast enough so it can influence treatment decision.
The study has allowed the translating of information at scale and in real time directly from the laboratory to a patients bedside, regardless of where they live in Australia.
