Keeping kids safe online is not a simple task, it takes time and effort and there are a number of steps involved.

To help navigate our way through this new reality we are joined by our special guest, Michelle Derrig Author of the highly successful protective behaviours picture book ‘Only For Me’.

Michelle is a child protection advocate and stay-at-home Mum to four children aged from 5 to 15.

Michelle’s book, Only For Me is a gentle rhyming book which teaches young children that their body is private and that they have a right to protect their privacy. Since its release in July 2016, over 13,000 copies have been sold across the globe to critical acclaim by parents, educators, teachers and child protection organisation.

We ask Michelle questions including:

  1. You have been a child protection advocate for many years, what changes have you experienced and seen in since we went into lockdown?
  2. Why is online safety more important than ever before?
  3. You have mentioned that the media have reported about a handbook circulating the dark web, listing ways for predators to target children during the COVID lockdown. For someone who doesn’t know what the dark web is can you quickly explain what it is and why parents should be aware of it?
  4. Your article summarises online protection into ABC – can you tell us more?
  5. What are the types of threats that children may face online?
  6. Can you share any stories that illustrate the dangers/consequences?
  7. Children could be exposed to a new batch of malware threats because they are downloading more applications at the moment including viruses and ransomware. What has been your experience with this?
  8. What else can parents do to protect children?
  9. If god forbid a child was being targeted by a predator, what behaviours would a parent typically see? What should they do?
