The relationship between parents and teachers have no doubt strengthened these last few months due to homeschooling.

It is, however, essential to continue building on these relationships to ensure there is effective communication for positive family-school partnerships for the benefits of all involved, that bring children, parents and teachers.

To talk to us about this today and how we can formulate a relationship of trust and collaboration we welcome our special guest  Andrew Oberthur, a Primary School Principal with over 30 years experience teaching and leading primary schools in Brisbane.

In 2018 Andrew published his first book “Are You Ready for Primary School This Year? which is about building a culture of trust, collaboration and enquiry between parents and teachers.

 

We ask Andrew questions including:

  1. Have you noticed the relationship between parents and teachers has strengthened due to homeschooling?

  3. Research shows that parental involvement can free teachers to focus more on the task of teaching children. What are your thoughts on this?
  4. Your article explains when a child comes home from school and shares a concern with a parent, a parent has the choice of 3 RESPONSES. Can you please explain them to us?
  5. What are the 3 QUESTIONS that a parent should ask the school?
  6. What are the mandatory policies and procedures for all schools?  What questions parents be asking when they enrolling their child into a new school?
  7. When a parent engages with their child’s school, what are the common themes or reasons why parents engage?
  8. Why is it important that the parents know why they are engaging?
  9. What are the 3 QUESTIONS teachers should ask parents in response to any of their concerns?
  10. You’ve mentioned that when a parent goes to their child’s school they usually approach the teachers or the principal for one of 5 REASONS, can you explain what they are?
  11. Lastly, you mention when teachers respond to any parent request the teacher should filter their response with these 2 CRITERIA. Can you please explain what they are?
