Isolation is something we’ve all had to deal with it in some form or another throughout this pandemic. But, the effects of isolation can be much stronger, much more intense experience for children, mainly because they limited life experience to compare it to.
The reactions to isolation are a natural human response that serves a purpose, so our goal shouldn’t be to totally dismiss it. The goal is, however, how can we learn from it.
Today we welcome Elisabeth Shaw, CEO, Relationships Australia NSW to talk through the effects of isolation on children.
We ask Elisabeth questions including:
- What are the short and long term effects of isolation on children?
- What are the signs we should look for if a child has been affected by isolation?
- What can parents do to help their children?
- What advice do you have for parents with children’s whose behaviour has and does escalate?
- What are the effects of children experiencing boredom and loneliness?
- Do you think a period of isolation is an opportunity for parents to teach children self-regulation? If so, how?
- One would think that only children are better suited to life in isolation. What can we learn from them that can be helpful to other children?
