Planning a fun-filled family holiday? 1Cover’s head travel expert says that while family trips can be unpredictable, a few smart planning hacks can ensure smooth sailing.

“Travelling as a family, and in particular with young children, can be difficult but it doesn’t have to be”, says Natalie Smith, spokesperson for 1Cover Travel Insurance

“Parents can face a host of potential issues when travelling with small children. However, when armed with the right knowledge and tools, you can certainly lighten the load,” says Smith.

“We would advise you to start planning several months ahead and be sure to get all your documents ready. Ensure that all your passports and relevant visas are current as out-of-date documents can put a dent in your plans. There are also plenty of helpful services available to families travelling with young kids so speak to your airline and travel providers ahead of time.”

Travel insurance first

Smith says parents should secure travel insurance ahead of time whenever possible.

“Buying travel insurance well before your trip means you would be covered should an emergency force you to cancel or change your trip plans. You should ideally buy comprehensive cover as soon as you’ve booked your trip to minimise your risk. In the unlikely event one of your family members falls ill and can no longer travel, you could then claim back your cancellation costs. Additionally, your family would be covered for any unexpected medical emergencies abroad.”

Passport plan

Smith encourages parents to start planning their travels early and ensure they’ve left time to prepare any outstanding documents before heading overseas.

“Waiting for your child’s passport to be processed before an international trip can be incredibly stressful when left too late. Do your homework and start planning well before your trip. You’ll thank yourself for it.”

Prepare your medical documents

Preparing a copy of your child’s listed vaccinations along with any allergies or medications they require is always a smart idea when travelling. If you or your child have a medical condition you should pack documentation describing any required medication you require, along with an adequate supply of it, in addition to a letter outlining any relevant details.

Plan a check-up

If you haven’t visited your GP in a while, now’s the time to do so.

“If you’re travelling to a tropical destination, or with very young children, it’s smart thinking to check whether you’re up to date with all required vaccinations. It’s worth discussing any health risks to consider along with any medications worth bringing along.”

Map out your travels

Plan your itinerary in advance, considering your children’s interests and energy levels. Identify kid-friendly attractions, rest stops, and meal locations to minimize stress. Having a well-thought-out plan can keep everyone relaxed and happy while reducing the likelihood of any unexpected hiccups.
